The South Porch

WELCOME TO ST. NICOLAS TAPLOW WEB SITE

St. Nicolas Church is located in the village of Taplow in Buckinghamshire, between Maidenhead and Slough, just north of the A4 London to Bath road. It is about a mile from where the A4 crosses the River Thames at Maidenhead bridge. Taplow railway station, which is about 3/4 of a mile from the village, is on the Western Region route from Paddington. The village is now purely residential, all the original shops having been converted to dwellings. It’s remaining “public” buildings, the Oak and Saw pub, Church of England village school and the Church surround the large green in the heart of  the village. There are many historic buildings some dating from the 14th century.

There has been a Christian presence in Taplow since the 7th century and a Norman church was built next to Taplow Court at the top of Berry Hill. That church was pulled down in the 1820s and a new church built on  the present site a few years later. In 1865, the chancel was added at the east end; then in 1911/12 the rest of the church was substantially rebuilt with the copper spire added to the tower. The site of the original church is still accessible, in the grounds of Taplow Court, where a cross and some grave stones remain. Also on this site is a Saxon burial mound where a rich horde of artefacts was excavated, now in the British Museum. Also close to the original site is Bapsey Pool where Birinus, Bishop of Dorchester, baptised converts in the year 635.

St. Nicolas is one of the churches of the Jubilee River Grouping, in the Diocese of Oxford, along with local churches St. Peter Burnham, St. Mary Hitcham, St. Anne Dropmore, St Andrew Cippenham, Dorney, Eton, Eton Wick & Boveney.

The church itself was finished in the early years of the 20th century so it is quite modern in construction but retains a traditional style. It’s west door is easily accessible, via the lych gate, from arriving vehicles down the High Street. It is a large church and will seat 236 easily and 300 at a push. The central nave will seat 159 and has no restrictions on viewing. The North and South aisle will seat about another 77, with the normal arrangement, with a very few positions having some restriction of view. Normal available maximum seats is 260 plus 12 for the Lady Chapel. At special services and functions (Remembrance Sunday in particular) we can borrow extra chairs from the school. You can find pictures of the inside of the church on the Pictures page of this site. We are are glad to say that the church now has its own toilet facilities.

TIPS ON USING THIS SITE

We hope you find or web site informative and easy to use. To select a page just pick a button in the left panel. Some pages have secondary buttons to move to further pages. Each page has a return to the top button, at the bottom. Some long pages have return to top buttons at various positions.

Because the site is so picture biased it has been designed to only make sense if you are running your browser with “view pictures” on. So if you can only see a link to “Help” in the left frame you need to set your browser to view pictures.

The site was designed on a 17” screen set at 1024x768 pixels resolution, with a standard column on the left for History or Favourites listing. To position for best layout at this resolution - whilst viewing this page, drag the screen divider to the right until a scroll bar appears at the bottom of the screen and then drag it back again until it just disappears. If using 800x600 on a 17” screen it will look best in full screen mode. If you are using a smaller screen with 640x480 resolution, I’m sorry, it will require some sideways scrolling.
